Xterminal freezing on KDE

More information:  I'm using an old Number Nine Reality 334 AGP card.  It's 
using an S3 Virge/GX2 chip.  I'm using the SVGA driver with this and have 
tried no card, S3 VirgeGX, and S3 VirgeGX (generic) from within 
XF86Setup.  There is no setting for this particular Number Nine card.

The message spat out of xdm.log is thus:

SVGEReset called from sv3 . . . :line 300 (this is from memory, the ". . ." 
I don't remember).
