kde3 & screensaver lock

I compiled KDE3 from garnome.  When I tell screensaver to require a
password, the password I type in never validates.  Do I have to set
this somewhere or does it use /etc/passwd?  If it uses the normal
system password, it's not working for me.  Does it require a special
dev library?
