/dev/sequencer question

I'm new to the list so please excuse me if this has been answered before.

Running Mandrake 8.2 & KDE3.0 all sound works fine in general, and Kmidi works
too.

But Kmid does not, giving an error message "can't open /dev/sequencer probably
there is another program using it". I have no such device.

The Linux SOUND FAQ states that /dev/sequencer is usually linked to
/dev/music, but I do not have the latter device either.

I do have a /dev/sound directory with entries dsp, dsp1, midi, and mixer. In
/dev I have devices dsp, dsp1, midi, and mixer all linked to the entries in
directory sound.

Consequently I thought creating a symbolic link for /dev/sequencer to
dev/sound/midi might allow Kmid to work properly. No luck - Kmid just
crashes.

I would appreciate help getting Kmid to work properly - thanks in advance.
