Various apps locking up when attempting to print

I have tried printing various things in konquerer and kate.  I haven't yet 
tried printing in KMail but I imagine the same thing will occur.  When ever I 
attempt to print something the app I'm currently running will lock up and 
I'll have to kill it manually.  I have no problems when printing a test page.

If I use a non kde native app (for example Mozilla) I don't have any problem 
printing.

When the lockups occur I do see the following in the console where I started 
xwindows:

KLibrary: /usr/kde3/lib/libkdecore.so.4: Undefined symbol: init_kcm_printmgr
KLibrary: The library kcm_printmgr does not offer an init_kcm_printmgr 
function.

My config:
PIII-667
384MB RAM
Gentoo 1.1a Linux (build from source distro)
XFree86 4.2.0
KDE 3.0: built with the following compile flags:
	-march=i686 -mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops 
-fforce-addr -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -malign-functions=4
CUPS 1.1.14
Samsung 1250 printer - Setup in cups as a Samsung 6600 as the 1210 driver is 
busted.  Installed using Samsung's scripts

If anyone has some idea's of what I can try, please let me know.
