KDE3.0 anti-aliassing out the window - getting desparate

Upgrading to KDE 3.0 has caused my system to regress into a KDE 1.4 state with
the ugliest fonts ever seen. In other words: anti-aliassing refuses to work.
In short here's the situation:
I had a SuSE 7.1 with XFree86 v4.1 with KDE 2.2.2 with anti aliassing
- completely de-installed XFree v4.1 and KDE 2.2.2
- installed Xfree v4.2.0 from SuSE rpm for SuSE 7.1
- installed KDE 3 from rpms on kde.org (SuSE 7.1 branch)
- downloaded truetype fonts from M$ with the SuSE script (fetchmsttfonts)
- ran SuSEconfig
- logged into KDE, checked "anti-aliassing" in Control Center
Later I also tried:
- checked with xdpyinfo if the RENDER extension was available in X (yes)
- ran qtconfig (noticed that anti-aliassing was checked "on")
- in /etc/profile.local I set QT_XFT=true (I also tried with value "1")
- reconfigured X
- noticed that SaX2 (the SuSE X configurator) mentioned the
/usr/X11R6/.../truetype directory in the fonts section)
- noticed in ~/.qt/qtrc that enableXft and useXft both are set to "true"
Other environment variables:
KDEDIRS=/opt/kde3
QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3
XFree86 has the RENDER extension, I switched anti aliassing on in KDE Control
Center, I installed the truetype fonts with the SuSE script (fetchmsttfonts),
ran SuSEconfig ... -> no anti-aliassing.
What am I missing here?
