German keyboard layout

Hi

Please can someone help me with this.

I have edited the wscons.conf file as well as the XF86Config file to use the
de option for keyboard layouts.
I have also run kde and have made changes to the control centre keyboard
layout to use the German layout.
After doing all this, I can get the German layout working in my text
terminal, but not in my kde desktop.

Has anyone got any idea as to what else I need to do?
