Opening files from the Dolphin file browser on Windows 7

On further investigation I found that this only occurs when I try to edit files
which reside on one of the servers here at work. The address bar in Dolphin
shows an address such as "smb://servername/path/to/files". So perhaps it's a
problem with editing files over a samba connection.
