Openwindows will use the specification of depth & color specified in
/etc/dt/config/Xservers, whereas the failsafe afaik will only default to
8 bit depth. If you disable dtlogin (since it's really unneccesary on
single user systems/workstations) using dtconfig -d, you can use the 
.xinitrc from the console command line and just start X yourself using
xinit, i.e. xinit -- -dev /dev/fbs/afb0 defdepth 24 defclass TrueColor >
X.log 2>&1
