You could also log into a failsafe session and run startkde from there. 

FYI, if it works for root but not others then it is usually a permissions
issue (or possibly a difference in the environments).

You might be able to log kde's behaviour via .xinitrc if your dtlogin
allows you to choose to openwindows (not in solaris 9 afaik). So create
a .xinitrc file that has the line
/path/to/your/startkde > $HOME/kde.log 2>&1
in it. chmod 755 .xinitrc. and choose openwindows from dtlogin.
