As a former SoC student, I would say talking to your mentor on IRC regularly
is even better. More interaction means that problems that may arise are
detected earlier and solved more easily. Before all, the mentor-student
relation must be a relation of trust.

And don't forget the community you're in - on IRC, mailing lists and blogs
you'll be very welcome to ask for help and report your progress.
