Ok, that's good to know. So I don't have to download all mail again from 
server and could also archive mails in future locally without the risk of 
losing them with the next upgrade.

This is the most interesting part for me. I will certainly try this out on a 
fresh install before applying it to my work machine.

Ok, that's not an issue, I would migrate all machines to the same versions.
