I'd certainly love to see this as it is an improvement over current situation. 
Nonetheless both KMail and Akregator should use and respect the status 
notifier protocol better instead of having their own custom configuration 
about when and how to display the icon. Actually, this can be configured more 
comfortably in the systray settings. Ideally they should always display their 
tray icon unless there are no mails/unread feeds, then icons should hide when 
their visibility is set to 'Auto' (see systray).

BTW. Another issue but both tray icons are currently labeled as 'kontact' when 
these apps are used from within Kontact.
