It was created because, at the time the modularisation was done, Qt5 was not
yet planed. At the time, the plan was that the modularised should be able to
build Qt 4.8 as it, with everything on it.
It was decidd only very late that Qt 4.X would not be modularized.
This is the reason why we kept phonon there.

It depends what you want to do..
If you want a playback API to play multimedia files, or if you want low level
access to the hardware (recording, or playing generated sounds)
