Each framework has its own advantages and disadvantages. Phonon is for
super simple and lightweight playback of audio files. QtMultimediaKit is
for more advanced things.

I'm hoping that over the summer, we in KDEMM can talk with the QtMM
folks about somehow merging the two together, or at least better
defining each other's role in the world.
