IIRC it's not that the unittests don't run, it's that QSP on OS X doesn't have a special testing mode. I'm not really sure why that would be an issue on a CI system but it's clear that you don't want that on a more regular development rig.
It would probably be a lot less difficult to get this missing feature back into Qt as it doesn't really matter where you put the test locations as long as they're different locations. It should also be a lot easier to convince the powers that be that this feature makes sense on OS X too (even if it'd mean raising the question why they didn't include it in the first place ;) )
