One of the kde devs posted that they're using qt4's printing engine,
which isn't all that mature yet as of qt 4.5. Unfortunately, not all the
necessary fixes got in by the qt 4.6 code freeze, but kde 4.4 will
include a hack around at least part of the missing stuff. qt 4.7 should
finally have a reasonably mature qt printing engine, and when it arrives
and kde can require it, we should finally be approaching kde 3.5 printing
functionality levels.

But obviously that's not anything like an immediate fix. kde 4.4, slated
for February, should improve things some, however. Meanwhile, printing
using other methods (like your PR/LPR script) may be the best
alternative, if you're seeing issues.
