I'm not sure that I understand this - at least, I don't understand where 
relaying comes into it.  Let me tell you about my setup, then you tell me 
what's different in yours.

I should start by saying that I don't know the first thing about exim.

My IMAP server also acts as my smtp server.  My normal usage is to send to my 
server, which directs local traffic to the lan, then the rest to my ISP's 
server.  When away from home I use googlemail's smtp server.  Both work 
perfectly.

This is how I set up kmail -

Home -
Name - Local smtp
Host - 192.168.0.40
Port - 25
Security Tab -
Encryption
None

Roaming
Name - Googlemail
Host - smtp.googlemail.com
Port - 465
X Server requires authentication
Login - my googlemail login
Password - mypasswd
Security Tab -
Encyption - SSL
Authentication Method - Plain
