Have you tried using Grouping in Thunderbird? Combining Sorting,
Grouping, and Filtering really makes handling large Inboxes much easier.
I've found Grouping by Sender is a good way to quickly clean (delete,
mark as Spam, or create a new filter on that Sender) the unwanted
messages out.
