Hmm.
AFAIK is gmplayer the GUI version which shouldn't be running when mplayer is 
used through KMPlayer.

Weird that it doesn't work for you but works for John.
Maybe it is a setup problem, like different priorities for different players 
or plugins.

Maybe the mplayerplugin you've got installed but John hasn't.
