Why are you using such an old version?  I'm using 10.2 (2005) on
everything from 450mhz K6-2's and Pentium IIs to Athlon XP's and Athlon
64's.  Works fine on all.

I'd recommend using Easy URPMI - http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ . I also
update KDE to 3.4 (easy to do).
