Hi, Ian. KNewStuff is something we wanted to have in 4.0, but it was cut
at the last minute since we could not test the servers at that time. Now
Jeremy is helping Josef with the implementation, and it has reached a
point where we can use it at least for download of new themes. At this
time, we will still be the only ones uploading content to our servers.
But the ability to update and provide new themes between releases is a
great asset, and KNS also gives us a way to cut the size of the games,
which is important for some distros and installation on small devices,
while still having these available for users.
The idea that floated around in the meeting was to ship each game with a
small number of themes (2 to 4 seems enough), and provide additional
ones in the KNS server.
I think my suggestion to Jeremy was probably not the best, as I forgot
that KGr is not using KGameThemeSelector. If you were using it (like
KBlocks, KMines and most of the games), then adding KNS support is a
matter of one additional parameter in the KGameThemeSelector
constructor, and one .knsrc file. See for example KBlocks, which already
has this enabled: you can select Configure KBlocks and use the theme
dialog to install a new theme.
