The original Linux Wacom Driver project is, as you mentioned replaced by the 
build in XF86free-input-wacom.

Lucky for me, the xsetwacom tool is available for both versions.
The reason I still use the "direct calls to xsetwacom ..." is because I wasn't 
sure if most distros will use the XF86free-input-wacom soon.

Right now, according to what the comments on kde-apps.org say, this works for 
both ways.
