no, that's unreliable.

bugzilla simply has to know which branches are going to be which
releases at any given time. that way it can auto-set versions from
BUG: mails and make useful proposals for interactive use. of course,
maintaining the versioning information must be a mandatory part of the
release process (insn't it yet?).
