I activate the debug flags 1204 and 1214 (current CVS), and start kdesktop.
I have currently 2 HDs mounted.
The desktop shows only mounted HDs

I get:
kdesktop (icons): KDIconView::slotNewItems count=2
kdesktop (icons): slotNewItems: media:/hda2 text: Hard Disk (hda2)
kdesktop (icons): slotNewItems: media:/hda6 text: Hard Disk (hda6)

this is ok.

I now mount another HD in a shell and get:

kdesktop: KDIconView::slotRefreshItems
kdesktop: Item not found: media:/hda4

-> now slotNewItems.

When I unmount it again, I get
kdesktop: KDIconView::slotDeleteItems

Thinking: When I look at media:/ with konqi, I see all devices, unmounted or
mounted. So the items are always there.
Probably KDirLister does it correctly when it just tells me on mounting that
one item has changed with the refresh signal ?
On the other side, why do I get then a deleted signal on unmount ?

Puzzled ...

       Some operating systems are called 'user friendly',
             Linux however is 'expert friendly'.
