i think Matthias Kretz answered this well: it really depends on the 
application and the number and type of options, so having a global control 
over this probably isn't useful. perhaps a global default that can be 
overridden by the application developer, but then i'd be a bit concerned 
about people getting lazy and just letting the default take over, regardless 
of how poor a result that may be.
