Me too. We do get bug reports about this[1], and people in there have made the case that the current approach is broken by design in today's modern world. All other operating systems I'm familiar with get by with a simple combobox populated with apps, so we probably can too. I'm familiar with the code and can have a go at doing this sometime soon.
