What is the output of 

ls -l /usr/games/gcompris
(after package installation)

ls -l debian/gcompris/usr/games/gcompris 
(in the debian source, after you have built the package)

Debugging Debian packaging problems requires a link to a .dsc (along
with the .orig.tar.gz and .diff.gz, of course); otherwise it is hard
to figure out what's going on.  Not impossible, surely, but looking at
the source package is way faster than diagnosing remotely such obscure
failures.
