Several programs are quite reluctant to write to RAW files, as a slight error 
can make the file unreadable. Apparently, even camera makers get it wrong 
sometimes for their own files and programs...

That said, programs like Exiftool and Exiv2 allow you to modify RAW file 
metadata. I'm not sure if that also works when you change the lenght of a 
string, but that you can try on a small selection (of copied files!).
As the copyright tag seems to be an EXIF tag (and not a makernote tag), your 
chances of this working should be good.

Of course, as digikam seems unwilling to write to your RAWs, updating the 
copyright while importing may not be possible.
