In that case, it's perhaps easier to use e.g. pick labels, or colour labels.
No need to create or delete those, and you can easily filter for them. Colour 
labels have the added advantage that they are very visible.

But it still means a lot of database reads/writes. Perhaps a temporary marker 
(limited in lifetime to the current session only, and not requiring database 
access) might be a useful feature?
