NAS, shared database and multi-users are completely different things.

NAS:  storage, usually hard drives, somewhere on the network, as the
location, for either the photos or the databases. ==> many people
on this list have a similar setup. Going back through the archive
of the mailing list should help you. The most important is the speed
of the network, at least GigE or much better 10GigE.

shared database: multiple computer accessing the same data but not
always at the same time.

multiuser: concurrent access of the digikam data by multiple users at
the same time. This will be a monster/huge project

The thumbnails are already in a separate database:
thumbnails-digikam.db

Gilles will know when this became about.

To go network and mutli-user is whole level of complexity. Try
looking at pimcore or phraseanet or...
