I had exactly the same problem but with about 50,000 images. DK was
slower than molasses.
After a while, somebody suggested that I run smartctl on my driveS
and sure enough, the drive with the images was on the way to where
hard drives go after a useful life...
I replaced the failing hd and everything went back to normal.
Do SSDs support smartctl? Don't know, if not: is there an equivalent
for SSDs? Is your system running too hot?...
