It appears that Natty is running 1.8.0.

I'm only running 1.7.0 in F14 right now.

In ubuntu if you want the latest (stable) releases, you pretty much have
to run the latest ubuntu release.   They aren't great about backporting
and given their user base, I can't say that I blame them.

If you enjoy that sort of thing, you should be running Fedora.  At least
in Fedora you have access to -unstable and -testing, which gets you most
of what you get when you build without the building process and with
community support.

When it comes to libraries and dependencies, I find yum (in Fedora) a
lot easier to work with than apt and its variants.  I'm an rpm guy.
