To which I feel compelled to point out that a photo organizer like
digiKam is in no way a file-manager, so why should it mimic this
particular file-manager trait?

It's worth noting that digiKam doesn't behave at all like
Dolphin/Konquerer in any number of other ways, including preselecting
the first entry upon opening a folder. That's perfectly logical in a
photo-organizer, but not what one would want in a file-manager.

It seems counter-productive to attempt to force a single set of usage
patterns upon two completely disparate applications. The reasoning in
software design should always be along the lines of "what's best for
the user". Certainly, there are times when the overriding argument is
that the user expects a certain behavior to follow a given action and
that this expectation is so in-grained that even though it may not
necessarily be optimal on its own, the total user experience is
improved by adhering to the sub-optimal behavior.

In this case, however, I would strongly argue that the user does not
necessarily expect this behavior and that changing it would provide
numerous improvements without ANY negative side effects.
