More info: after running Rebuild Thumbnails, I see that ~/.thumbnails
has grown to 442.2 MB. However, there is absolutely no effect on
performance versus an empty ~/.thumbnails directory. In other words,
even after Rebuild Thumbnails, digikam seems to be creating thumbnails
only when the thumbnail in question is meant to be displayed on the
screen (as described in earlier email).
