Revert layout change, releasing beta1?

That's the most pointless idea ever ;) The layout surely is the most 
experimental part of trunk; if anything needs beta testing, it's this.

My proposal: Revert to the old layout (yes, the 1.4.0 layout), and _keep_ it 
that way for the Fast Forward series. Then we can experiment with a new 
layout in the 2.0 branch.

The layout change is way too disruptive to get polished in time for a minor 
release, it still has numerous issues. User feedback generally reaches from 
"Are you nuts?" to "Good lord please change it back.", Frankly, I tend to 
agree, cause what we have now is something half-baked not up to our 
standards.
