Ok, I tried that.  The session file doesn't seem to show anything useful
(but it's at the end of the email).

When I tried starting applications with the server's display, they
showed up ok.  So it does seem to be an issue with the startup script,
or it's equivilant. 

Any hints what I could look at next?

Here's the session from one of those failed attempts (trying to start
/usr/bin/xterm in a floating window)
