I can confirm the black screen after upgrading to KDE 4.5.4

In my case, I could solve it choosing IceVM as a login wm and disabling
"desktop effects" in "system preferences". 

I can now login in KDE, but I can't enable desktop effects.

I don't know if this can be considered "a fix", though  :-)
