I suppose you got the kdesdk/umbrello from KDE CVS. That is the right
version to use.

cd umbrello
make
su
make install

Umbrello 2 is a completly rewrite of Umbrello, which isn't finished yet. So
the right version to use is the KDE CVS version. If you are interested in
the new design please read the whole umbrello-devel mailing list archiv and I
think you will learn very much about it.
