Oh! I missed your point. 
Now, I see what you are saying. Certainly, the behavior of the fuction 
has been changed. The check should be like this:

  if(offset + (patternLength - patterOffset) > size() || patternOffset >
= pattern.size() ||
    patternLength == 0)
