The instructions should work just fine. However, more specific instructions 
for many distributions (including Ubuntu) are available on this page:

Note that for Ubuntu we also provide a number of different binaries in 
launchpad PPAs, for easy installation using your package manager. See 
https://launchpad.net/~rkward-devel for an overview. Since you are using an R 
version from CRAN (or a similar source), make sure to use the "-cran" version 
of our PPA(s), too.
