hi,

i successfully pushed this a little further:

i downloaded all windows installers to a linux machine, installed everything to a certrain folder (using \"wine\") and burnt that folder on a DVD. the only thing i didn\'t leave untouched was rkward.bat, because i noticed it had \"SET R_BINARY\" set to an absolute path. i just changed that to a relative path (say, SET R_BINARY=\"..\\..\\R-2.11.0\\bin\\R.exe\").

rkward.bat started on another windows machine as it should directly from that DVD :-) it took ages (that is several minutes) to read everything from the medium but once rkward was up, it behaved quite responsive.

now we know that a) you can prepare a functional windows-setup of rkward without access to windows itself, and b) rkward for windows can be started directly from read-only media as well.

one scenario a can imagine is distributing rkward via a read-only samba share throughout an institution -- map the network share and you\'re ready to go. i\'ll give that a try.
