Regarding the daily builds from git: IMHO the solution is to fetch the translations at the same time you check out the sources, because at that time you have for sure a network connection, and most probably also Python and svn. This patch series changes `makedist.sh` to also do this, which covers at least the official releases (I think/hope!).

Can you please point me to the actual scripts for craft and PPA?

That was my first attempt; sadly, it cannot be possible, because GETTEXT_PROCESS_PO_FILES places the generated .gmo files in the current binary directory, so e.g. both 
`i18n/po/it/rkward__plots.po` and `i18n/po/uk/rkward__plots.po` would have the same `rkward__plots.gmo` rule in the same directory.
