Ok, so it looks like the current approach is a good way to go forward,
and I can safely clean up some of the no-longer-needed stuff in the code
(including the + and x buttons at the bottom, for example).

A whole lot is possible, but at varying degrees of difficulty. Adding a
uniform background: Easy. Horizontal lines: Relatively so. More
complex styling: Essentially you can paint anything inside the
cells, but that's more difficult. What tends to get particularly messy
is changes that might affect the height of a row.
