Hm, looks like it will only work for _installed_ languages (which en
and C are not), and go back to the default for other codes...

I'm still trying to reproduce this, but I fail at making any language
other than American English the default in System Settings, here...
While I continue to struggle with this: What values do you have for
env | grep "LC_"
env | grep "LANG"
? BTW, you could also try running rk.switch.frontend.language("C"). But
this is really meant for some tests, only, and will not give you a
clean UI.
