we'd need to investigate how the R port handles this. i assumed that the mac 
versions of R install binary packages, but the port seems to fetch sources 
instead (but i really didn't look to deep into this yet). if that is really 
the case, perhaps RKWard could change that by setting an appropriate option, 
so we can safely get rid of the build environment.

R is not the problem, space-wise (except for the possible issue mentioned 
above). also, we'd need to create another portfile that looks for that third 
party files (not sure whether this would have a chance to become an official 
MacPort), and i suspect this might cause more trouble than it will solve, 
e.g., changes to the R installation can break RKWard.

but sure, if you installed R previous to the bundle, you'll end up with two 
installations.

apart from the file size and the not yet solved issues regarding the graphics 
devices[*], the mac version seems to work fine already. overall, my impression 
so far is that it even runs smoother than the windows version already, likely 
due to the fact that the BSD base of OSX has much more similarities to 
GNU/linux than NT based systems. of course, there are surely some more hidden 
bugs waiting to be discovered, so more testing is needed.

[*] = don't worry, they do work, they just don't offer the special features 
yet that RKWard usually comes with, so they're more like ordinary R devices at 
the moment
