note that the version string needs to be set in a couple more places. 
Currently, the script
   scripts/set_dist_version.sh
is used for that. It may make sense to convert this to a cmake-based solution. 
However, it should be handled consistently (i.e. either all in the script, or 
all in set_dist_version.sh).
