ok, this is definitely it:

m at yrla ~ $ cp -a /usr/share/mime /tmp

# remove the whole "application" folder
m at yrla ~ $ rm -rf /tmp/mime/application

# rebuild the database
m at yrla ~ $ update-mime-database -V /tmp/mime

# there it is again!
m at yrla ~ $ ls /tmp/mime
aliases      fonts          icons          magic         multipart  treemagic 
video        all            generic-icons  image         message    packages
types        x-content      application    globs         inode      mime.cache
subclasses   uri            x-epoc         audio         globs2     interface

so, instead of unpacking the mime.zip i prepared earlier, a much more elegant 
workaround would be to call

 sudo update-mime-database -V /opt/rkward/share/mime

after the .dmg package was installed. i'll update the README file accordingly.
