OK, the error is of a special kind:

If the current device is a trellis device (like one generated from any 
function in Lattice package) then Using X11 > Edit > Draw grid spits out an 
error saying that plot.new hasn't been called yet, which is obviously true: 
grid() wouldn't work on a trellis device. 

How to check whether plot.new has been called or whether  the device is a 
standard one or a trellis one.

This doesnot affect the situation when grid() is used as an embedded plugin 
because none of our plugin plots are trellis plots.
