Hi all,
I'd like to release rkward 0.3.5 later this week. Time for some good testing,
and fixing remaining bugs. Pierre is also still working on a cool additional
feature (syntax highlighting in the R Console), but since there have been
unexpected problems, it's not clear, yet, whether this will get into the
release, or whether it will have to wait for the next release.
So, if you can find the time, please test the current version of rkward, which
is available here:
http://rkward.sourceforge.net/temp/rkward-0.3.5.tar.gz
and as a debian package:
http://rkward.sourceforge.net/temp/rkward_0.3.5_i386.deb
The more features you can test, the better, but every little helps, and many
eyes see more than just a few. So give it a try, and report all bugs or
quirks that you find.
Also, there are a number of tasks to complete before we can make the new
release public. Here's a list of the items I can think of right now. If you
could take on one or two of those, that would be great. Also, if you can
think of something not on the list that should be done, please speak up.
1) Update http://rkward.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?title=General_FAQ (esp.
the compilation section, I'll have to document the new configuration
options). Add compilation instructions to
http://rkward.sourceforge.net/index.php?content=faq .
2) Update the screenshots on
http://rkward.sourceforge.net/index.php?content=screenshots . Obviously the
upload will have to be done by someone with access to the web-pages, but if
you could create a good looking screenshot, showing off some features of
RKWard, that would be very helpful. If you have access to web-space
somewhere, please upload there, to keep traffic on this list low. If you
don't have web-storage, you can also sent screenshots to me directly.
Use .png file format to keep files small.
3) Review existing descriptions of RKWard, on the rkward-website, on other
sites with info on rkward. Should the descriptions be updated? Do you have
suggestions for wording?
4) The project is now accepting donations via the donation system on SF. We
should place the donations logo somewhere on the website (not too prominent,
we don't want to bully our users). Donations will be split among whoever is
currently actively working on rkward.
<a href="http://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=50231"><img
src="http://images.sourceforge.net/images/project-support.jpg" width="88"
height="32" border="0" alt="Support This Project" /> </a>
Yves, do you have time to take care of this?
5) Packaging: A .deb package will be made available for the official release,
but for other distributions we don't have anything so far. Do you know how to
create binary packages for your distribution, or would you like to give it a
try?
6) Translations: Not too many strings should have changed, recently, but now
is a good time to update your translation. In order to do so, do a
make package-messages
first, and then translate missing strings as usual.
7) User Documentation: It may not be realistic to write a complete
documentation for rkward before the release, but it would really be nice, if
someone could volunteer to start writing something. A documentation template
is available in doc/en/index.docbook. Further instructions are available
here:
http://i18n.kde.org/docs/markup/index.html
Ok, that's the most important items, as far as I can see. If you could
volunteer to work on one or two of them, that would really be great!
Thanks!
Thomas
