Is there any chance that a tarball could be released with language
bindings that are known working? You didn't go into detail explaining
what parts of the build are broken, so I'm guessing here...

At least the ruby & python bindings do compile here, the latter after
applying some patches from http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=269044,
which are applied in trunk afaics.
